Skaill House is the fine 17th century mansion overlooking the spectacular Bay of Skaill on the Orkney Islands. Home of William Graham Watt, 7th Laird of Breckness, who unearthed the World famous Neolithic village of Skara Brae in 1850. The house was originally built in 1620 by Bishop George Graham (Bishop of Orkney 1615-1638), and has been added to by successive generations over the centuries. In its 400 year evolution, all 12 Lairds have been related, contributing to the history and collections in the house.
Today, after careful restoration work, the house is open to the public and entry is included in a joint ticket with Skara Brae, which is just a 200m walk away. Skaill House has been accredited by VisitScotland as a four star visitor attraction. Visitors can experience a family home as it was in the 1950s, and discover the items collected by the family since the 17th Century. Neolithic and Iron Age finds, Captain Cooks’s dinner service, the Bishop’s bed, and Stanley Cursiter paintings are a few of the many fascinating items on exhibition here.
Children are very welcome here at Skaill House, and can join in our much loved Viking hunt as they explore the rooms of the house. The house abounds with ghost stories to capture the imagination during your visit.
Effie’s of Perth
We know our Tea... but tea is almost never enough on its own. How about a plump, floury homemade scone with lashings of clotted cream and our own strawberry jam? Or maybe you've heard about our carrot cake, widely considered to be the best in the area. Prefer something a little more substantial? How about Macaroni, made right here in our kitchen to our secret recipe with Lockerbie mature cheddar cheese and durum pasta? Handmade chips? Of course you can... you are assured of a warm welcome, good food and something just a little bit...magic.

Glenapp Castle Hotel
This Relais & Châteaux hotel is a rare gift, a castle hotel, a place of grandeur and elegance but also a home steeped in history. This luxurious, award-winning, five red star Relais & Châteaux hotel provides an intimate level of service, with genuine attention to detail. It has great beauty in its period furnishings, interiors and through the breath-taking gardens, forest and seascapes that surround the castle. As you sweep up the long tree-clad drive you will glimpse the beautiful façade of the castle, encapsulating the romance of the Scottish baronial style with magical towers, turrets and crenellations. Once inside, a world of Victorian splendour is yours. Oak panelled halls lead to the heart of the castle, offering stunning views out to sea, taking in the famous volcanic outcrop of Ailsa Craig, then on to the Isle of Arran, Holy Island and on a clear day, the hills of Northern Ireland. Each of Glenapp’s 17 guest rooms (20 from November 2018) are individually and luxuriously styled with a unique combination of fabrics, furnishings, antiques and art. All our rooms are spacious, with many having fires for the winter months and there are a variety of suites with magnificent views over woodland and the surrounding seas; a perfect retreat after outdoor adventures and an exquisite dining experience. Our award-winning restaurant provides guests with one of the finest dining experiences available in Scotland. The six course tasting menu in the evening is an experience not to be missed and the same exceptional quality and creativity shine through in our lunch menu and our luxury afternoon teas. Naturally we have an extensive wine cellar and selection of whiskies to complement your choice from the menu. We select the very best local produce both for its freshness and the excellent quality available in Ayrshire. All our fish and shellfish are line-caught or hand-dived of Scotland’s west coast, and the game comes from local estates; our beef, lamb and pork are farmed only 17 miles from the castle with much of the fruit, vegetables and herbs coming from our own gardens. Looking out to the iconic Ailsa Craig, the beautiful, secluded and peaceful gardens of Glenapp Castle offer the perfect location to relax, recharge and take afternoon tea. Take time to fully enjoy the sights, sounds and scents of 36 acres of castle grounds, strolling the carefully tended lawns and pathways, surrounded by a vast array of exotic plants that have been collected since Victorian days.
